You can see how much more the hostas had filled in by this time last year.

My son is a professional landscaper. He has certifications in many areas including pesticide application. He has access to powerful tools that make him very efficient at his job.

All the tools he uses are gas powered and designed to be used on a daily basis. They need a fair bit of upkeep and don’t work well if they are used intermittently. However, a good blower and the big powered shears that he wields like a katana have enormous appeal. I asked him what tools he thought a gardener should have. He gave a thumb down to the gas powered shears. You would only use them once or twice a year, and they would not be worth the investment. We did come up with a good list.

Eye protection and Hearing protection. These are definite must have gardening tools that are often overlooked. Landscape professionals are required to have their hearing evaluated regularly to make certain that have enough protection. You can see the “earmuffs” he is wearing in the photo. Neither are expensive and are well worth having.

Hand snips are a vital tool. Get ones with a belt case so you don’t leave them lying, forgotten, somewhere.

A quality pair of Hedge Shears is an incredibly useful tool. You will use these all the time, not just for taming that overgrown hedge.

A good blower is essential for a professional finish to your gardening project. Blow away detritus and clippings, Fluff your garden beds, so they always look neat and tidy. Avoid electric blowers with cords, the battery powered blowers are getting better, but for the same money, you can get a more powerful gas blower. You don’t need a backpack blower, but if you have a large lot, it can reduce your fatigue.

I was introduced to this type of hoe, sometimes called a loop hoe, a couple of years ago. “Where have you been all my life!?!” I grew up using a standard garden hoe. I was terrible. The stirrup how is so much better for weeding and cultivating. It easily makes my garden look great.

This is one you don’t hear about. I think it is a must. My landscape professional recommend a multi-tool where you can change heads from your line trimmer to the blade edger. This gives you a super professional look.

This tool may seem pricey but along with the string or line trimmer attachment, it is used weekly for the entire season, and the result is terrific.

I talked about some other great tools in a previous post 5 Great Gifts for Gardeners

As it is not a tool I didn’t include it in the list of 7 must have gardening tools for Spring, BUT I recommend that you add a good sunscreen to your list of must haves for gardening.

I am a big fan of La Roche Posay. I find their products have good protections and do not irritate my skin.

It only took the first time my son did it for me to love it. It adds a professional touch and it's not difficult to use.

Interesting. I love a great looking lawn. That's why I pay my guy to do it lol My husband is clueless when it comes to this stuff. Me too. Very interesting article.

My son wants it to look like a golf course. Who am I to argue if he is going to do it. He is so efficient.

A stirrup hoe??? I never heard of that before!!! And, personally, I hate my cultivator so I need to give this a try! I started a vegetable garden for the first time this year and fully expected it to be a learning year more than a fruitful year. These tool suggestions will help me prepare for next year!

I love gardening. Unfortunately I don't have much of a garden right now. Some pots and a beautiful christmas tree that is in desperate need for a trim. Love those tools especially the Edger! ♡

This is great, I have few of those tools that I am using to clean my garden myself :-) I might hire someone to help me though because sometimes it keeping me busy traveling and maintaining my blog. Thanks for this tips! Much love, Julius

That gas powered blower looks hard core! It makes our pissy little battery powered blower look like a hair dryer. I need to get a blade edger because we just use the whipper snipper and it doesn't look as good as what the edger can do! Thanks for sharing your list.
  8. Gemma says:
Wow I had never even heard of some of these tools. Do you think if I buy some for my husband, he may do some gardening ;)
  9. Kelsey says:
These tools make me want to start gardening! I live in an apartment with no yard, though, so sad. Once I have my own place, I want to have a garden, and these gardening tools look really useful!
