I visited my brother, in northern Illinois, earlier this month. We had fun hanging out and going out on Lake Michigan on his boat I managed a trip to The Art Institute of Chicago, which I shared here. Explore Chicago’s Art Institute
My brother lives in the original farm house at Tempel Farms in Old Mill Creek, Illinois. The farm is a truly lovely property and is very large. One of the exciting parts of the farm is the horses. The Tempel Lipizzans to be precise. Tempel Farms breeds and trains this beautiful breed of horse. Lipizzans are originally from Lipica in what is now Slovenia. They have a long history of performing their beautiful haute école forms at the famous Spanish Riding School of Vienna.
I had the good fortune to attend one of the Tempel Lipizzan horse shows while I was in Illinois.
Extraordinary and breathtaking!!
We met the mothers and babies. The horses start life brown and eventually turn the lovely grey that is the familiar Lipizzan color.
The horses that perform are the stallions. They can be rather high strung and take an experienced rider to manage. We saw the young males who are learning their first forms. Dressage national champions, a fantastic performance using the lounge line where the young lady got extra points for bravery with her terrific connection with her horse from her position behind it. The one place we are all reminded not to be.
The riders of the Tempel Lipizzans Horse Show also demonstrated the beautiful “Airs above the ground” by the horses.
The Tempel Lipizzans Horse show is a beautiful event which should please everyone, horse enthusiasts or not.
Gurnee Mills is a huge shopping destination along with 6 Flags Great America. They are about 60 minutes north of Chicago, and 45 minutes south of Milwaukee. These two popular destinations are only a couple of miles away from Tempel Farms and the Tempel Lipizzans Horse Show. Round out a day of shopping with a delightful afternoon of beautiful dancing horses in a lovely country setting.
